Write Interactive Fiction That Reads Like a Novel

Underfiction is interactive fiction without a fixed choice tree. Describe an action, speak as a character, or direct the narrator from outside the scene. A frontier model continues in literary prose while scene memory carries consequences forward.

There are no numbered doors and no route you are supposed to find. The story can turn on a whispered answer, a decision made too late, or an instruction only the narrator hears.

A scene, written for you
The key was still warm when Mara placed it in your palm. Behind her, the station clock lost a minute and found it again. "If you take the northbound train," she said, "we never met." The whistle sounded. You could board, ask what she had unlocked, or tell the narrator that Mara is lying about which train matters.

You direct; the engine follows. Try a line like Let me miss the train on purpose. Mara should realize why before I explain it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a choose-your-own-adventure game?

It is more open than a choice tree. You can write any action or dialogue, change point of view, jump in time, or give the narrator a direct note. The next passage is written around your direction rather than selected from prepared branches.

Can a long interactive story stay coherent?

Yes. Scenes work like chapters. Finished scenes are summarized and carried forward, while older turns inside a long scene compress automatically. Promises, clues, and relationships can survive across dozens of scenes.
